A study on the suitability of 3D-printed models to analyse sounds of the whistling arrows

This paper examines the subject of whistling arrows, a type military equipment that can produce sound through use horn or bone whistles. Despite their fascinating nature, arrows have been largely understudied topic within medieval archery legacy due to difficulty involved in manufacture and testing. However, growing availability 3D printers has made it increasingly feasible for researchers test analyse archaeological artifacts. Accordingly, this study tests hypothesis using models produced by overcome challenges associated with manufacturing arrows. Ten whistle based on three different typologies dating Turkic Khaganate period were printed subsequently tested, resulting sounds recorded analysed.
